ASE Fact Sheet
Mission: The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence
(ASE) was founded in 1972 as a non-profit, independent entity
dedicated to improving the quality of automotive service and
repair through the voluntary testing and certification of
automotive technicians.
Scope of Program: ASE administers a comprehensive
series of certification exams for automotive repair technicians,
alternate fuels technicians, engine machinists, and parts
specialists.
Requirements: In order to earn ASE certification, a technician must
pass one or more of the exams and present proof of two years of
relevant hands-on work experience.
Testing: Tests are administered at over 700 locations each May
and November.
Recertification: ASE technicians must retest every five years in order
to keep up with changing technology and to remain in the ASE
program.
Methods of Identification: Those who earn certification are issued wallet and wall
credentials, plus an appropriate shoulder insignia. Employers of
ASE technicians usually display the ASE sign on the premises and
post their technicians' credentials in the customer waiting area.
